Langkawi: open all year round, a duty free island means there is cheap alcohol, great local and expat food and watersports options.

Langkawi beaches

The best place to stay in Langkawi is Pantai Cenang; here you will find a variety of restaurants: Malaysian, seafoods, thai food, pizza and even Mexican food. There are also loads of juice bars, alcohol bars, tour operators/moped hire shops, shops for clothes, souvenirs etc and this all leads onto a very lively beach. On this stretch there are also loads of budget accommodation options such as AB Motel which have dorms without windows to a shared room with a window for slightly more. My preference is to actually stay just off Pantai Cenang ( 15 minute walks away, 2 minute drive) on Pantai Tengah at Zackry Guest House as for a great price you get an air con room, fast & reliable internet, parking and really friendly service things making this one of the best value hostels I have stayed at in Malaysia.

Cost: RM70 for a single room shared bathroom, cheaper if you are sharing

The day:

An Island Day trip

Head off on one of the islands tours to see some of the beauty Langkawi is famous for. There are two options: the islands hopping tour which includes a visit to the Lake of the pregnant maiden where supposedly if you swim in it you will be pregnant within a year, eagle feeding and a visit to the very beautiful island of Beras Basah.

Or head to the Mangrove and geopark tour where you can explore the mangroves and hopefully spot some of the local wildlife, the bat or crocodile caves, some deserted beaches, a fish farm and see eagles. There are lots of tours on offer that include a combination of these activities.

Cost of a tour approximately: Walk down Pantai Cenang and see what dfferent prices the tour operators are offering. For the island hopping tour most of the tours offered are fairly similar so it is not a case of spending more will get you a better tour. Prices from RM30.

For the Mangrove tour there is variation in the tours on offer so have a look at the different tours and the prices and select one that you are most comfortable with.  These tours are slightly more and prices start from RM50 and should include lunch.  The tours should include pick up from your accommodation.

After your tour head down to Pantai Cenang beach and relax! If you went on the island hopping tour then grab some lunch from one of the stalls/local restaurant on Pantai Cenang or on the beach there are stalls selling coconuts and barbequed corn.
